Vision FilmsAn unauthorized Rolling Stones documentary focusing on the turbulent late-’60s period of the band’s career that culminated with the group’s performance at the ill-fated free concert at California’s Altamont Speedway will be released January 17 as a home video.

Days of Rage: The Rolling Stones’ Road to Altamont will be available on DVD and via various video-on-demand outlets.

The film, in part, examines how the Stones’ image and music weren’t in sync with the “peace and love” sentiments of the Woodstock generation, but rather more accurately reflected the volatile era of the late ’60s, a time when the U.S. was involved in the Vietnam War and violent protests and political assassinations were commonplace.

Days of Rage features interviews with famed Stones photographer Gered Mankowitz, the band’s one-time tour manager Sam Cutler, Rolling Stone magazine writer and editor Anthony DeCurtis and more.

In the movie’s trailer, DeCurtis notes, “The Stones are hardened. They never fully bit on all the idealism of the ’60s. ‘We can transforms things by smoking pot’…was just not realistic. In a sense, The Stones vision was truer.”

The Altamont concert, held in December 1969 in Tracy, California, was a free event headlined by The Rolling Stones. During the band’s set, an 18-year-old man named Meredith Hunter who was brandishing a revolver near the stage was stabbed to death by a member of the Hells Angels motorcycle club, which had been hired to provide security for the event.

The event, which also featured Santana, The Jefferson Airplane and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, was marred by violence throughout, with pool-cue-wielding Hells Angels frequently getting into altercations with audience members.
