L-R: Berton Averre, Doug Fieger, Prescott Niles, Bruce Gary; Paul Natkin/Getty ImagesThe Knack‘s two surviving original members, guitarist Berton Averre and bassist Prescott Niles, have put together a video featuring them playing a coronavirus-themed parody of the band’s 1979 chart-topping power-pop classic “My Sharona.”

In the clip, which was posted on YouTube recently, Averre — who co-wrote “My Sharona” with late Knack frontman Doug Fieger — notes, “Some people have asked whether we were going to get around to doing our own ‘Sharona’ corona parody song, because apparently, there aren’t enough of them.”

He continues, “Sadly, our lead singer is no longer with us and, trust me, you don’t want to hear me croak it out.”

Averre then quips that he considered doing an instructional video on how to wash your hands, but instead, he had a better idea — making an instruction video on how to play the “My Sharona” guitar solo. He adds, “With any luck, we’ll get Prescott Niles, my old partner in Knack crime, here to join me at the end, if we can work out the sheltering and social distancing part.”

Berton proceeds to rip into the solo in what appears to be his home office. As the tune nears its end, Niles shows up in a split screen playing bass, and the two old band mates warble “Bye, Corona!” together instead of “My Sharona.” Averre wraps things up by saying, “Get the hell out of here.”

As previously reported, “My Sharona” has experienced an increase in digital streams since the coronavirus crisis began. According to Billboard, the Knack members plan on donating the extra royalty money they’re receiving from the track to Music Heath Alliance.

Fieger died in 2010 at age 57 after a long battle with cancer, while founding Knack drummer Bruce Gary died in 2006 at age 55 of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.”
