© Paul McCartney/Photographer: Linda McCartneyLord of the Rings director Peter Jackson‘s much-anticipated Beatles documentary, The Beatles: Get Back, has been pushed back almost a year.
The film, which promises an alternate look at the recording sessions for the group’s final studio album, 1970’s Let It Be, had been scheduled to premiere this September 4, but the flick now will debut on August 27, 2021, Walt Disney Studios reports.
Jackson created Get Back using 55 hours of unseen footage shot in early 1969 during the making of the Let It Be documentary and album, as well as 140 hours of mostly unheard audio recordings from the sessions.
According to the original March 2020 press release announcing the new film, it will showcase the “warmth, camaraderie and humor” of The Beatles at that time. Get Back also will include footage of the Fab Four’s entire legendary final performance on the rooftop of Apple’s Savile Row London offices, a portion of which appeared in the Let It Be flick.
The documentary is expected to offer a more positive look on the Beatles members’ relationship during the Let It Be sessions, whereas the 1970 film — which premiered a few weeks after the Fab Four announced their breakup — seemed to focus on the intraband tensions that led to the group’s split.
A 50th anniversary reissue of Let It Be was expected to be issued around the time of Get Back, but it’s not clear if that release now will be delayed as well.
