Construction on I-94 is slated to begin within the next few weeks, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

MDOT spokesman Nick Schirripa tells us tells us work to rebuild the westbound I-94 between Britain Avenue and Washington Avenue is set to begin this month, as the Red Arrow Highway work at Exit 23 is well underway.

“We are currently working at exit 23 and that will continue until late May, early June will be done with that,” Schirripa says.  “While we’re doing that, we anticipate here in the next few days, like early next week, maybe a little later, starting work on West I-94.”

Two lanes of I-94 will be open in each direction during this work, but there will be several ramp and intermittent local road closures.

Starting on or around March 11, the following ramps will be closed: exit 30, Napier Avenue entrance ramp, Pipestone Road, Exit 27 to Niles, and Niles Avenue entrance ramp.

Schirripa notes that MDOT construction start dates are contingent on contractor availability and the weather.
