The Federal Emergency Management Agency is about to begin an appeal period for the updated flood maps for Van Buren County that were released in released in January of last year.

FEMA says the agency periodically will review data from the area and determine where flooding could be most likely. The maps help regulators determine flood insurance requirements and help steer development.

Van Buren County property owners are encouraged to review the latest information to learn about local flood risks and potential future flood insurance requirements. Residents are asked to identify any concerns or questions about the information provided and take part in the 90-day appeal and comment period. Property owners who want to make an appeal will need to submit technical information, like hydraulic and hydrologic data, to support the claim. The appeal period begins Thursday.

The maps now under review were drafted in coordination with local, state, and FEMA officials, and community review of the maps has already taken place. However, before the maps become final, anyone can make an appeal or ask questions.
