Buchanan High School will be a creepy and kooky place to be this Friday and Saturday night as its drama club puts on a production of The Addams Family Musical.
Show co-director Katie Persak tells us The Addams Family Musical features all of our favorite characters from the classic TV series and comic strip.
“In this musical, Wednesday has fallen in love with a boy named Lucas, and it’s really about the antics of her family as they try to deal with her growing up and changing a little bit and getting away from the family,” Persak said.
So, what made her select The Addams Family for the students this year?
“First and foremost, I think that it just fits our cast really well,” Persak said. “We have a really great cast this year that really fit into the roles of these characters really well. And it’s also nice that the show ‘Wednesday’ on Netflix has really kind of taken off and makes it relevant and exciting for the community as well.”
Persak says this is the first musical to be put on at Buchanan High School in six or seven years. She selected it last year and auditions started before Christmas. With rehearsals going on for a few months now, she says it’s been rewarding to see the students grow their talents and form lifelong friendships.
While this version of The Addams Family is tailored to be appropriate for a school, Persak says it does feature some interesting and dark props that you wouldn’t see in many other productions.
“The torture device, for sure, is I think a big one. There are a couple different scenes with torture devices where Wednesday is torturing her brother. There’s also something called the Heretics Chair that people will see if they come and see the show.”
Persak says the music is of the poppy variety, and it’s been fun seeing the students learn how to perform it. It’s all Buchanan High School students portraying Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, and Lurch.
There are shows Friday and Saturday, both at 7 p.m., after the musical launched Thursday night. The Addams Family Musical is open to the public and it’s $10 for adults and $8 for students to get in.
