Jury duty scams are going around again.
In Oakland County, sheriff’s officials said several residents have received a suspicious message. A person posing as a lieutenant demanded their target call a number, claiming they failed to show up for federal grand jury duty. Once a target calls, they’re told they must pay up to avoid arrest or other consequences, says Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.
“The red flag is if you actually engage with anybody that there’s a demand for money,” Bouchard said. “There is no government agency that would call you over the phone and try to get you to immediately by some electronic method send them money that moment.”
Bouchard says do not give these callers a penny.
Bouchard added it’s extremely difficult to get your money back because the scammers usually collect money via untraceable methods, like bitcoin or wire transfer.
