Berrien County Commissioner Sharon Tyler has got her eye on an effort to eliminate property taxes in Michigan.

Speaking at Thursday’s meeting of the Berrien County Board of Commissioners, Tyler said she got an update recently at the Michigan Association of Counties meeting on the AxMITax movement. The campaign failed to make the ballot last year, but Tyler said the effort continues.

If they go on the ballot, it would be on the November 3 ballot of 2026,” Tyler said. “It would go into effect December 18, 2026. So, you’re going to have all those lost revenues if this goes and certain programs we have. So it’s something to keep your eyes open to.”

Tyler said commissioners ought to watch the issue because losing property taxes would result in a big hit to county functions mandated by law. In particular, she said it should be a concern to public safety.

While she sees some good in the proposal, Tyler warned things previously approved by voters would be null and void if AxMITax were to succeed.
