Some passengers aboard Dial A Ride buses will now be required to wear seat belts following action by the Twin Cities Area Transportation Authority Board on Tuesday.

The board heard from TCATA Deputy Director Tressa Greschak, who showed video from inside a Dial a Ride bus during a crash in February. It shows passengers in seats without another seat in front of them being thrown forward when the collision occurred. One of them struck his head, suffering serious injuries. Also, a baby’s stroller was knocked forward.

Greschak said a new policy would mandate seat belt use for passengers in similar positions.

The base of this seat belt requirement, it’s not going to be every single seat on the vehicle,” Greschak said. “It is what we are calling exposed seats.”

Also, items like wheelchairs and strollers will also have to be secured.

Greschak told the board passengers who refuse to comply with the seat belt rule will be asked to move to another seat. While TCATA can’t enforce the policy beyond that, she said this will at least help to reduce injuries to passengers when there’s a crash.

Following the presentation, the TCATA board approved the new policy.
