Small businesses in Michigan are seeing both encouraging and troubling trends right now.

The Small Business Association of Michigan is out with its 21st annual Michigan Entrepreneurship Score Card. It shows the number of new businesses that stay open for at least five years is among the highest in the nation.

Small Business Association President Brian Calley says the picture is a mixed bag.

Michigan has generally narrowed the gap,” Calley said. “While they’ve gone up and down with the top-performing state, the gap between the two has gotten smaller and smaller until today, when it’s close to even. So this is another really exciting development.”

Calley says on the other hand, since the pandemic, business openings are going down. Also, closings are trending up.
