The 2025 South Haven Speakers Series is set to continue next month.

On Thursday, May 8, the series will host professor from the University of Michigan, Greg Dooley, who will discuss the economic forces influencing college sports today and what the future may hold.

“Really a little bit of history to kind of share all these crazy things that are going on today that you hear about in the headlines, they’ve been going on for a long time, really since the dawn of college athletics,” Dooley says. “Then we get into, what’s happening right now with all the athletes and players being paid, you know, the escalating coaching pay?

Dooley will delve into the historical context leading to the significant changes in this arena and invite the audience to engage in a conversation about the evolution of collegiate athletics.

“They’ll understand the historic references going on in our society at the time and some of the major figures, not only in sports but beyond, that helped shape it,” Dooley says. “We’re talking U.S. presidents, World Wars, and all of those themes kind of played out that really helped shape kind of where we are today.”

The event will be held at Lake Michigan College, South Haven Campus. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m. for a wine and cheese reception, with the presentation starting at 7 p.m.

Admission is $10, and students can attend for free.
