Pistons 106, Knicks 103 – Pistons beat Knicks 106-103 in Game 5 to stay alive in the first-round series
Cade Cunningham had 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists, and the Detroit Pistons stayed alive in their first postseason appearance since 2019 by beating the New York Knicks 106-103 on Tuesday night in Game 5 of their first-round series. Ausar Thompson added 22 points and Tobias Harris had 17 for the Pistons, who will have a chance to even things up Thursday night at home in Game 6. If they win that, the deciding game would be back at Madison Square Garden on Saturday. Detroit, though, has lost an NBA record-tying nine straight home games since 2008.

Pacers 119, Bucks 118 – OT – Haliburton and Pacers eliminate Bucks from playoffs, win 119-118
Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers stole one from the Milwaukee Bucks. Indiana forced two turnovers in the final 29 seconds of overtime, and Haliburton blew past Giannis Antetokounmpo for the go-ahead layup with 1.3 seconds left to give the Pacers a 119-118 victory and a 4-1 series win. The Pacers closed the game with an 8-0 run over the final 40 seconds of OT to eliminate the Bucks in the first round for the second straight season. Haliburton had 26 points and 10 assists as he improved to 9-0 in home playoff games. This chippy series ended fittingly with a shoving match between the teams at midcourt.

Isaac Collins hit his first career homer for Milwaukee, and Freddy Peralta pitched six innings of two-run ball. Chicago used an opener for the fourth consecutive game, tying Tampa Bay in September 2018 for the longest such streak in major league history, according to STATS. Tyler Gilbert became the first pitcher to start three times in a four-game stretch since Zack Greinke for Milwaukee in 2012, according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Luis Robert Jr. and Andrew Benintendi homered for the lowly White Sox.

Cubs 9, Pirates 0 – Seiya Suzuki falls a single short of the cycle, Cubs go deep four times in 9-0 rout of Pirates
Seiya Suzuki hit a two-run homer and fell a single short of the cycle as the Chicago Cubs went deep four times in a 9-0 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Shota Imanaga (3-1) gave up six hits with three strikeouts in five scoreless innings before leaving with leg cramps after a leadoff double from Andrew McCutchen in the sixth. NHL – Valtteri Filppula, Finland’s only Triple Gold Club member, announces his retirement
Valtteri Filppula has decided to retire from hockey at age 41 after playing one final season at home in his native Finland. Filppula is one of just 30 players and the only Finn in the Triple Gold Club for winning the Stanley Cup, Olympics and world championships. Filppula was a trusted, two-way forward on the Detroit Red Wings’ Cup run in 2008. He captained Finland to its first Olympic hockey gold medal at the Beijing Games in 2022. Filppula played 1,222 regular-season and playoff games in the NHL with Detroit, Tampa Bay, Philadelphia and the New York Islanders from 2005-21. His first professional experience was with the Grand Rapids Griffins of the AHL

NCAAFB – Ohio State and 6 other Big Ten teams will carry their QB competitions into fall
Eleven Big Ten teams have settled on their starting quarterbacks. Ohio State and the six others will carry competitions into preseason practice. Illinois’ Luke Altmyer, Michigan State’s Aidan Chiles, Nebraska’s Dylan Raiola, Penn State’s Drew Allar, Rutgers’ Athan Kaliakmanis, Southern California’s Jayden Maiava and Washington’s Demond Williams Jr. are returning starters. Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, Iowa’s Mark Gronowski, UCLA’s Nico Iamaleava and Wisconsin’s Billy Edwards Jr. are transfers who have locked up jobs. Julian Sayin appears to have an edge over Lincoln Kienholz at defending national champion Ohio State.

NCAA – NCAA decision could alter junior hockey and the pipeline to the NHL
Hockey players no longer face the choice Aiden Celebrini and his brother Macklin did at 16 in deciding whether to maintain their college eligibility. The NCAA’s recent decision to lift the ban on Canadian Hockey League players has the potential of dramatically changing junior hockey’s developmental landscape in North America. While players will benefit the most from the ruling, college hockey, the CHL and USHL are the ones that will have to adapt. Hockey East commissioner Steve Metcalf believes the ruling will most benefit the NCAA in making college hockey the prime feeder of NHL-ready draft talent.

NFL – Prank calls to other players unrelated to the one received by Shedeur Sanders
The prank call to Shedeur Sanders during the NFL draft wasn’t related to the ones other players received, according to a person familiar with the league’s investigation. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the investigation is ongoing. Tyler Warren, Kyle McCord, Mason Graham and Chase Lundt also have reported receiving prank calls. The call to Sanders, who was drafted by the Cleveland Browns in the fifth round, made headlines when the Atlanta Falcons said defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich’s son was responsible. Sanders received a prank call on the second day of the draft while waiting after entering the draft expecting to be a first-round pick.
