The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety is honoring 45 vehicles with their top safety awards this year.
Mazda had the most top safety picks with Asian brands dominating the list. Ford’s Mustang Mach-E, Lincoln’s Nautilus, and the Chevy Traverse are the only Detroit 3 products on a list that had few pickups and minivans. Institute President David Harkey says he’d like to see that change.
“These are vehicles that are often purchased these days with the intent of hauling family members in the rear seat, and so that’s an area that we would really like to see automakers do more to achieve better ratings in our test,” Harkey said.
Harkey says their new tests do more to rate backseat safety.
