Crafting the perfect March Madness bracket is nearly impossible.

According to Albert Cohen with the Michigan State University sports analytics program, there are billions of outcomes — 9.2 billion, to be exact. He says there are too many factors to consider when filling out your bracket, like the record of the team, injuries, and historical matchups. ‘

Cohen says, however, there is a science around crafting a bracket that can help you. One of the most important factors is how well a team works together.

I think that in March Madness, when you see teams gelling together, do you see a couple players step up like you saw last year at Oakland that really just grow and lead the team and you see that happening during the tournament? I think that’s also part of the entertainment factor that you actually see these players develop into those on-court leaders,” Cohen said. “So I think that one of the things I would look for is, are you seeing the players really connecting?”

Cohen says if you want a better shot at perfection, then you should probably fill out more than one bracket.
