It has been 41 days since the incident at Dowagiac High School following the Benton Harbor vs. Buchanan playoff basketball game, and there is still no decision on charges for those involved.

Cass County Prosecutor Victor Fitz tells us they are still awaiting some follow-up information before official charges are announced.

“On March 5th, the prosecutor’s office received a request for charges against multiple persons in this matter,” Fitz says. “Two days later, the prosecutor’s office requested that additional follow-up be conducted. We are awaiting the completion of that follow-up. Once it’s received, this office will take further action regarding this incident.”

Fitz says he expects to receive this information fairly soon but cannot provide a precise date for the case’s closing.

“It’s material relevant to our charging decision and again, I know that the police agency is continuing to accumulate the information that’s being requested and we’re anxious to receive it and once we do, again, we’ll make a decision regarding the matter,” Fitz says.

On February 26, several individuals were caught on video throwing objects at a game official after the Benton Harbor-Buchanan boys’ semi-final district playoff game. The official had to be escorted out of the facility by Dowagiac Police, which initiated an investigation.
