You may see stepped up enforcement on the roadways this week since it’s Work Zone Awareness Week.
The Michigan Department of Transportation’s John Richard says there were more than 6,000 crashes in work zones last year alone. 16 people were killed in those crashes, three workers and 13 drivers.
“[We have] new legislation that has speed limits, monitoring speed, and if you’re going above the speed limit, it starts flashing,” Richard said. “There’s new concrete barrier wall legislation, where if a project is in place longer than three days, it qualifies for concrete barrier wall. So, anything we can do to protect these workers, but it’s all about the driver. It’s all about paying attention, not tailgating.”
Richard says on Wednesday, wear orange to show support for each work zone crew.
